Araya Women and Children Charitable Organization (AWCCO) is a non-governmental, non-religious and non-for-profit civil society organization, established in October 2014 and registered in accordance with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia-Charities and Societies Agency Proclamation No 621/2009 bearing with certificate number 3334; and re-registered in accordance with the later FDRE-Agency for Civil Society Organizations Proclamation No 1113/2019.
The rationale for the establishment of AWCCO is to play its role in addressing & minimizing the socioeconomic problems of the vulnerable groups, particularly in the empowerment of women and children. It is coined in memory of the late Mr. Araya Zerihun (the founding father of the vibrant national CSO, Tigrai Development Association-TDA and other prominent academic institutions in Tigray: Mekelle Institute of Technology, Kelammino Special High School) for his unforgettable deeds in alleviating many societal problems of the region in particular and the nation in general.
AWCCO has made a significant achievement in reaching vulnerable groups since its establishment. AWCCO’s past performance and external audit reports reveal enormous activities conducted to address the need of vulnerable groups particularly in the empowerment of women and children, and recently IDPs. So far, AWCCO has supported about 30,873 total beneficiaries among which more than 20% of them are direct beneficiaries (5,783 children and 2,231 women) primarily women and children in about fifteen wordas. AWCCO has also been responding in the emergency response to the best of its organizational capacity, although the devastating war along with the siege affected its main programs, significant number of vulnerable groups including IDPs get supported: particularly in the prevention and responding of Child Protection and Education, Gender Based Violence (GBV), Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), nutrition (BSF & TSF).
Furthermore, AWCCO is an active member of ACSOT - Alliance of Civic Society Organizations of Tigrai (a giant umbrella organization/Network of 80+ CSOs). And currently, AWCCO is co-leading ACSOT as a board member together with TDA, REST, ORE & TYA. Moreover, AWCCO is a founding member and General Assembly Chair Organization of the newly established human right based consortium called Tigrai Human Rights Advocacy Network (TIHRAN); and AWCCO has been actively participating in the inter-agency coordination (member of mainly Protection, CP/GBV, Health, Education, Nutrition and other clusters). However, AWCCO has been scoring such achievements with ample of changes and challenges. Lack of fund-raising schemes to mobilize resources including grants and human capital development at all the organization’s hierarchy were among the main challenges that AWCCO encountered in its entirety. Hence, this new strategic plan is expected to play a crucial role in bridging these gaps.
AWCCO is committed to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of vulnerable and underserved women and children through quality intervention programs.
AWCCO envisions the wellbeing of women and children in a safe and upbringing environment.
